Timeline for Recieving I-20
Process for receiving the I-20, Certificate of Eligibility from the University of Oregon
Admissions Review. It takes about six weeks after the application deadline date for the department admissions committee to review the applications. The committee will only review complete applications. When the applicant is accepted, the department recommends to the Graduate School the applicant be admitted into the program.
Graduate School and Office of Admissions approval. The next step is the Graduate School and Office of Admissions reviews the applications to see if all required documents have been received and all requirements have been met. The Office of Admissions will not formally admit or send an I-20 until all required documents have been received and approved. Please note the department is not responsible for issuing the I-20.
Required documents for international students include (these are in addition to the documents required by the department):
- Financial Statement. US Government regulations require that the University of Oregon verify the availability of sufficient financial support for non-immigrant students before the I-20 can be issued. International students must submit supporting financial documents (e.g., Graduate Teaching Fellowship (GTF) appointment contract, scholarship award letter and/or bank statements).
- Official Transcripts. To be admitted to the Graduate School for the purpose of seeking an advanced degree or certificate, the applicant must have an accredited degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelors degree from an institution of recognized standing. Official transcripts with certified English translations are required.
- English Language Proficiency. A satisfactory command of the English language is required for admission to the University of Oregon. Applicants whose native language is not English must show proof of language proficiency through one of the following three methods: TOEFL, IELTS or a degree from an English-speaking country. Scores should be sent directly from ETS to the University of Oregon. The institution code is 4846.
Approximate timeline. After admittance by the department the rest of the approval cycle can take 6-8 weeks, provided the required documentation has been sent the Office of Admissions.
Sending the I-20. Once admitted by the Office of Admissions, the applicant will receive a letter and immigration packet from the University of Oregon. The packet is sent by express mail and usually takes a week or two. Most students will receive an I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility) to apply for an F-1 visa.
